Documentary: The shadow of the past in the present, youth and politics in Chad

In this documentary, we follow Chadian activists from 2015 to 2022, when new elections were announced after the death of President Idriss Déby and two years of military transition under General Mahamat Déby, the late president’s son. The transition period saw activists take a new stance, effectively entering the political arena. The period from 2021 to 2022 bears similarities to the early years of Idriss Déby’s reign: the military takes power, preaches democracy and openness, but turns into dictators. Mahamat Idriss Déby has proven to be a spider-like dictator. The activists of 2015 want to believe in change, but they are engaging in the same dynamic as the activists of the 1980s. The future of Chad is uncertain.
